Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop. A hissing sound near the indoor or outdoor unit often indicates refrigerant gas escaping through a crack or joint a definitive sign of a leak. A bubbling or gurgling sound suggests refrigerant and air mixing in the refrigerant lines, which happens when a leak allows air to enter the system.
Sign #4: Significantly Higher Electricity Bills
When a mini split is low on refrigerant, it has to run longer and work harder to achieve the same cooling effect if it achieves it at all. This extended run time directly translates to higher electricity consumption. If your bills spike noticeably with no obvious explanation and your home doesn't feel as cool as it should, a refrigerant leak may be the cause.
